WALRC Research Award

About the Award

The WALRC Research Award recognises individuals and teams who have made an outstanding contribution to Western Australia’s red meat and livestock industry through excellence in research, development, extension, communication and innovation.

Established in 2026, the annual award celebrates those whose work has delivered meaningful improvements in on-farm productivity, profitability and sustainability. By recognising excellence across the research and innovation pipeline, WALRC aims to acknowledge the people whose commitment and leadership continue to strengthen the Western Australian livestock industry.

The award is presented each year at the WALRC Livestock Matters Forum and reflects WALRC’s commitment to ensuring research delivers practical outcomes for producers and supports a productive, resilient and sustainable red meat sector.

2026 Inaugural Recipient:

Professor Andrew Thompson

The inaugural WALRC Research Award was presented to Andrew Thompson in recognition of his exceptional contribution to sheep research and his lasting impact on the Australian sheep industry.

Over more than three decades, Andrew has dedicated his career to improving the productivity, resilience and welfare of sheep enterprises through practical, industry-focused research. His work has consistently bridged the gap between scientific discovery and on-farm adoption, ensuring research translates into meaningful outcomes for producers.

As the leader of the Lifetime Ewe Management program, Andrew has helped deliver practical management knowledge to more than 5,000 sheep producers, representing around 40 per cent of the Australian sheep flock. His research has transformed industry thinking, improved producer decision-making and generated significant economic benefits for sheep enterprises across Australia.

Presenting the award, WALRC Chair Dr Bronwyn Clarke said the award was created to recognise individuals whose work delivers lasting value to producers and the wider industry.

“The award aims to highlight someone that has excelled in research, development, extension and communication but, most importantly, the practical application of innovation to improve on-farm productivity, profitability and sustainability.”

In accepting the award, Andrew said he was humbled by the recognition.

“It is a real honour to be awarded in your own backyard.”

Throughout the award presentation, colleagues from across Australia and New Zealand paid tribute to Andrew’s collaborative leadership, scientific excellence and unwavering commitment to ensuring research makes a genuine difference on-farm.

Colleagues consistently describe Andrew as someone who leads with purpose, always focused on delivering research that improves farming businesses and supports the long-term sustainability of the livestock industry.

“Thommo has always lead from the pack. He isn’t about the limelight – he is about doing things that will actually make a difference to farming  families. His knowledge of the literature and project work is exceptional. His actions and words are one and the same – he leads by example and has dedicated his working career to helping the sheep industry. His work ethic and expectations of quality are as high as anyone I know. He’s put in massive hours over the years and his output has been phenomenal.”
– Dr Mark Ferguson

Andrew’s ability to bridge the gap between research and practice has been recognised as one of his greatest strengths. His work has challenged industry thinking, influenced management decisions and helped producers adopt new technologies and practices with confidence.

“I think for me Thommo has not only had a resounding impact on the industry in WA but over much of the world with his research findings being presented and taught right across the country and in New Zealand. He has committed his heart and soul into the sheep industry. His research into ewe lamb joining particularly for me has allowed me to pursue things that I might have thought not possible and have had him in my corner to support me the whole way through. His research continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in sheep production.”
– Hamish Thompson

His colleagues also acknowledge his unwavering focus on ensuring research is both practical and profitable for producers.

“Thommo has been very focused on research aimed at on-farm decisions and delivering immediate benefits to farmers. He has been a champion of including a profit focus in both extension messages and more importantly, defining the research problem. This is leading to a change in the way projects are planned and carried out and will be an ongoing legacy of benefit to the farming community.”
– John Young

Beyond his research achievements, Andrew is recognised for his generosity in sharing knowledge, mentoring producers and supporting the wider industry.

“He’s certainly made one of the most positive impacts on the sheep industry in WA. I struggle to think of anyone who’s had a greater impact.”
– Clayton South

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development research scientist Beth Paganoni highlighted Andrew’s role in changing the way agricultural research serves industry, while New Zealand researcher Dr Mark Ferguson described him as “the ultimate collaborator”, recognising his ability to bring together diverse teams to deliver the best outcomes.

These reflections highlight why Andrew was selected as the inaugural recipient of the WALRC Research Award. His legacy extends far beyond individual research projects—it is reflected in the producers he has supported, the industry he has helped shape, and the lasting improvements his work continues to deliver across Australian sheep production.

As Andrew prepares to conclude his formal research career, the inaugural WALRC Research Award recognises not only an outstanding researcher, but a leader whose legacy will continue to influence the Australian livestock industry for generations to come. Through his leadership, mentorship and commitment to practical, producer-focused research, Andrew has helped shape a stronger, more resilient sheep industry.

WALRC congratulates Professor Andrew Thompson on becoming the inaugural recipient of the WALRC Research Award and thanks him for his exceptional contribution to Western Australia’s red meat and livestock industry.
